But now that extra spending money is gone, economists are concerned about what comes next. That means many Americans have more debt than savings and suggests “that American households fully spent their pandemic-era savings as of March 2024,” they wrote in a recent report. Consumer spending plays a crucial role in driving economic growth in the United States, and it has shown remarkable strength over the past two years. “A continuing strong labor market could help consumers maintain spending patterns similar to those observed recently, even without pandemic-era savings,” they wrote. What comes next: Disney, Airbnb, Uber, Anheuser-Busch, Tapestry and Dillards all report later this week — investors will look for any comments about how consumer spending, or lack thereof, is altering revenue forecasts for 2024.

Yevhenii Zavhorodnii/Global Images Ukraine/Getty ImagesIn Ukraine the air raid alerts are incessant. Kyiv has the best air defense in Ukraine; the country lacks the resources to defend other cities this way. He noted that Ukrainian air defense had done a spectacular job that morning intercepting every single missile launched at Kyiv. The United States has essentially cut off Ukraine, and Ukrainian air defense is quickly running out of ammunition. After we landed back in JFK, we turned off the air raid sound on our phones.

Are these the most beautiful coffee shops in the world?

The Budapest Café is one of many eye-catching businesses featured in “Designing Coffee: New Coffee Places and Branding,” a coffee table book — no pun intended — that puts the world’s most photogenic, eccentric cafés and roasters on display. Its "bright, playful design and color palette transform a former dental office into a bustling and vibrant bakery café," Kingston writes in "Designing Coffee." In an increasingly competitive coffee industry, coffee shop owners are putting thoughts into how their spaces are designed. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is going small to try to win big in November. Biden’s campaign taped the visit, which was closed to reporters, and later released curated snippets online. “You have to go to the places where people are,” said Biden deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty. Biden aides say their goal is for the president — or those he's meeting with — to amplify the president's message too. “I would rather have 100 outside voices saying Joe Biden is great than one piece of content from us saying Joe Biden is great,” he said.

Melanie, the singer-songwriter who rose through the New York folk scene, performed at Woodstock and had a series of 1970s hits including the enduring cultural phenomenon “Brand New Key," has died. Her publicist Billy James told The Associated Press that Melanie died Tuesday. With a voice that could shift from high-pitched and coy to a deep soulful rasp, Melanie wrote and sang hits including “Look What They’ve Done to My Song Ma" and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)." “I probably have a quirky way of writing, and I think I was misunderstood,” she told the Tennessean newspaper in 2014. Melanie was married to her manager and producer Peter Schekeryk from 1968 until his death in 2010.

Hours after, he was projected to win the New Hampshire primary race even though his name wasn’t on the ballot. “In politics, you run like you’re down when you’re winning or when you’re losing,” Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said Wednesday. “I think President Biden’s going to help people win, in the end. That is part of what influenced the decision, announced Tuesday, to shift two key West Wing advisers from the White House to Biden’s campaign. But one thing Biden’s teams believe will help center their arguments is a clearer race between Biden and Trump.

EMMAUS, Pennsylvania (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday tried his hand at retail politics — stopping in a trio of Pennsylvania stores to stress the value of small businesses and talk up his economic record. Biden gladhanded and joshed at a running shoe store, bicycle shop and coffee house in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. “If you notice, they're feeling much better about how the economy is doing,” Biden said in response to a reporter's question. “It was cool for him to be able to see the small businesses that power our economy and the folks behind that,” Shapiro said. As he left the coffee shop, the president noted that his birthplace was just 90 minutes away.

LONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The India Club, a historic London curry house with links to India's freedom struggle, will close its doors for the last time on Sunday after failing to stop a hotel redevelopment plan. For decades, the India Club has drawn regulars craving a masala dosa or bhuna lamb with a pint of Cobra or Kingfisher beer, but also many Londoners of Indian descent. Retired civil servant Ian Angell, who has been an India Club regular for nearly a decade, said its closure was very sad news. U.S. fast-food chains add automation to boost speed

With mass shortages of low-cost labor due to the pandemic, chains shifted to technology investments in their kitchens to fill the gap. The addition of automation tools in restaurant chains could cut down on wait times, driving higher consumer engagement and increasing sales for the rest of the year, restaurant executives say. Thirty-six percent of 1,000 U.S. people told HungerRush in a survey in May that they believed major restaurant chains don’t have enough staff to take orders, prepare food, and handle deliveries. Last year, Domino's Pizza Enterprises announced an automated pizza prep device in partnership with Picnic Works, a Seattle-based food-automation startup. "Anytime there's new automation, it creates new kinds of jobs," said Gaurav Kachhawa, chief product officer at Gupshup, a conversational messaging platform.

Rize: Turkey’s hidden mountain hideaways

CNN —Rize province, on the Black Sea coast near Turkey’s northeast border with Georgia, is still largely unknown to many international travelers. Away from Rize itself – the seaside city which lends its name to the province – the area’s valleys and plateaus, surrounded by high-altitude mountain ridges, have remained largely rural. With high rates of rainfall, Rize’s mountain villages (yayla) become a point of escape from summer temperatures. “The state of tourism in Rize is not very pleasant because visitors often arrive without much knowledge about the local culture or the nature. “I think the purpose of coming to Rize shouldn’t be to rush through everything and take a few selfies.

To find out how to make the most of downtime during work travel, Insider spoke to four experts about how they maximize their commutes. Voiceover artist Vanessa James said, "I use lounge access as a strategic part of my travels. If you don't have airport lounge access, buying a day pass is a good option if your wait time is going to be long. Business law professor Robert Bird says he doesn't opt for lounge access when he travels, and he only needs a quiet corner to be productive. Long car rides with colleagues to a work event or conference can also be a good time to brainstorm or collaborate.

Since then, her life has been wholly coffee-centric: from working as a barista to making TikTok videos of latte art and sketches based on her experiences working in coffee houses. In 2022, Eckroth entered the U.S. Barista Championship tournament and emerged as that year's champion. And she says she has more to say about coffee at this year's competition.
TRAVELERS WORLDWIDE are converging on Amsterdam for the Rijksmuseum’s “Vermeer” retrospective, arguably 2023’s hottest art ticket. I was eagerly among them, but after touring the splendid exhibit (running through June 4), I felt compelled to dive deeper. And so I undertook a day-trip to the painter’s hometown, the small Dutch city of Delft, less than an hour away by train, to explore the place that figured so memorably in his art. On a frosty morning in early February, I walked from the train station past coffee houses bustling with locals and shops to the Oude Delft, the city’s oldest canal. Along the way, a waterside restaurant, Bij Harry, looked inviting, and I made a mental note to have drinks there if the day stretched late.
New York CNN —Forecasts from Walmart and Home Depot made for a grim day of trading on Tuesday. The mega retailers’ predictions of a weakening economy and a dip in consumer spending this year sent markets tumbling as Wall Street seemed to realize that the Federal Reserve’s campaign to quell inflation could yet lead to recession. What’s happening: We’ve written about the remarkable strength of the US consumer quite a bit here at Before the Bell. Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of America’s gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the US economy, so it’s nearly impossible for the economy to enter a recession as long as consumer spending is growing. American shoppers have almost single-handedly kept the US economy afloat by continuing to shell out cash for purchases despite stubbornly high inflation.

Mr. Friedman was a Broadway producer in 1963 when he and his then-fiancee opened a coffee house for entertainers in New York that became The Improv.
I'm happy to spend $5 on an Americano, even if I make a fairly modest income. I prioritize my coffee spending over other things, like new clothes or regular haircuts. Mostly, though, I just enjoy living in a world where local shops, and the people who run them, can thrive. When my husband and I first started dating, we'd often post up in a coffee shop to have "together-alone time." The organization referred to coffee houses as special places "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill."
